Custom-made fire resistance doors in the Düsseldorf Kö-Bogen Tunnel
The Kö-Bogen project in the heart of Düsseldorf is regarded as one of the most complex and significant construction projects the city has seen in recent decades. With the construction of a new metro line and the relocation of road traffic underground, new open spaces for urban design were created above ground. The underground traffic routing enables fast connections, relief for the city centre in traffic terms, and better accessibility through direct connections of the tunnel to several underground car parks. Franzen Feuerschutztüren from Erkelenz was involved in the structural fit-out of the first construction phase. It supplied differently equipped fire resistance doors from System Schröders for the stairwells, connecting corridors, and rooms in the technical areas of the tunnel.
North of the famous luxury shopping boulevard Königsallee, affectionately known as the "Kö", the "Tausendfüßler" (millipede), an elevated road from the 1960s, shaped the cityscape until 2013. Where this once pulsated as a main traffic artery, a modern urban space has emerged in recent years, drawing on Düsseldorf's historic structures. Exceptional architecture, such as a building complex designed by star architect Daniel Libeskind, pedestrian connections between various main shopping centres, promenades and squares for strolling and lingering, as well as many green and water areas make the Kö-Bogen a new centre of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital.
Consistent separation of traffic flows through tunnel construction
This transformation was made possible by a reorganisation of the traffic routing around Jan-Wellem-Platz. The city of 597,000 inhabitants consistently separated local public transport from private and pedestrian traffic. After eight years of construction, the Wehrhahn-Linie, a metro line running east-south, was opened in 2016. The tunnels for car traffic were built in two phases. The first construction phase saw the creation of the 300 metre long north-west tunnel opened in 2013 and the south-north tunnel taken into operation in 2014 with a length of 350 metres.
Custom-made fire resistance doors ensure safety
To protect the technical areas of the tunnel, the client opted for fire resistance doors of high quality and long durability from Franzen Feuerschutztüren in Erkelenz. The company has been a System Schröders licensee since 1976. For the Kö-Bogen Tunnel in Düsseldorf, Franzen did not supply standard solutions, but equipped the doors with various multifunctional properties. The doors manufactured and installed are smoke-tight according to DIN 18095, include glass cut-outs, are equipped with bolt contacts, magnetic contacts, or locking elements, or feature anti-panic equipment according to DIN EN 175/1125.
Customers of the System Schröders licensees receive fire protection closures that meet their often very demanding requirements. In doing so, they can be sure that all building law requirements are fulfilled and that the doors are properly certified. Our door constructions are tested according to current European standards and approved under building law. However, custom solutions that deviate from the national technical approvals are also realised by the manufacturers. Here, System Schröders offers a complete service comprising the development of the custom solution, the application for individual approval, and the expert reports required for this purpose.
